Dan and Rob who both work as personal trainers at the Kensington Close Hotel have been in serious training for their amazing challenge since October last year and have a testing schedule to build up the necessary stamina and endurance for this Deca-Ironman.
October - They swam 5 miles in the pool
November - They completed their first 1/2 Ironman
December - Ran their first ever marathon around Hyde Park - 3hrs 38 mins
January - They cycled 150 miles
February
It’s still too cold to swim for that length of time outdoors and so the venue was a 20 metre pool. That meant over 600 lengths and the guys covered over 12000 metres (7½ miles) during their swim.
Impressively, they maintained their pace and rhythm for the entire time, even managing to speed up towards the end.
March
Having run their first ever marathon in November, Dan and Rob ran back-to-back marathons this month to complete another important stage in their preparation. After an 8 hour shift in the gym, the boys finished the first 26 miles in just 3 hours 43 minutes. Dan said afterwards 'we could have gone faster but were very conscious of having to do it again!'
Day 2 saw them complete another tough 26 miles on a very warm spring afternoon but this is a great achievement and confidence builder as they prepare to run 10 marathons in 10 days during the challenge in September
April - A cycling weekend with 2 x 150 mile rides
May - Holidays in China and Ibiza - well they needed a break!
June - A 'warm weather' training trip with Dan's Uncle in Spain
July - Two more hard weeks training and then tapering down
August - A warm up at the Michelob London Ultra on August 4th and 5th and then the 'big swim' on the 15th and the start of the amazing journey
The cycle route starting from Dover will take in the Millenium Stadium and Murrayfield before ending at Twickenham. Along the route they plan to visit the 12 English Premier Clubs with guests joining them for stages along the way.
Warm Weather Training Visit
After all the rain and cool weather in the UK, it seemed even more appropriate to Dan and Rob as they flew to Spain for 4 days of warm weather training for their amazing triathlon to the rugby world cup.
The session represents the start of their final 3 weeks of hard training before the 2 athletes begin to taper down for the ‘big swim’ on August 15th. To swim the channel, it is necessary to complete a 6-hour sea swim and this was the main item on the agenda for the training visit.
On Saturday June 30th, it was a ‘short’ 2½ hour swim to get used to the sea conditions off Rincon del la Victoria. Later when the temperature began to drop back towards 30°C, they ran a hard 10K high up in the hills.
Sunday’s training involved breakfast at 5.30am and the two were swimming before 7am. After 3 hours, Rob began to suffer stomach cramps but bravely continued and finished the swim after 6 hours and 20 minutes and around 10 miles. Dan carried on for another hour and swam around 12½ miles – a great effort by both guys. That evening it was their one meal out of the trip and a much deserved, solitary beer.
On Monday, it was more running, this time along the Passeo for 10 K and then a night-time ‘dip’, important to overcome any fear of swimming in the sea in the dark. On Tuesday, it was another swim and another tough run in the hills. Then back to the airport and the flight back to……rainy Stansted.
A great trip and another important step along the way with many important lessons learnt.
