£30,000 grant to help leukaemia patients

Tim's Trust has been awarded a grant of £30,000 by the James Tudor Foundation. Our grateful thanks to Rod, Sarah, John and Dave for their help and support in making the grant possible. The money is going to Adele Fielding and her team at the Royal Free Hospital, Hampstead to support Minimal Residual Disease  (MRD) testing as part of the national trial for Adult ALL patients.

MRD testing has played an important part in the tailoring of treatment for children with leukaemia and the improvements in survival rates. We hope that the grant and the introduction of testing amongst adults with lead to a similar improvements in treatment and survival.

'Reevo' as he is remembered by his friends

The Tim Reeve Charitable Trust was set up in 2006 to raise funds in memory of a brave and much loved young man who died of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in December 2005.

Tim had one of the most aggressive types of leukaemia. Research into the childhood version of ALL has produced huge improvements in treatment and a cure rate of 80-90%. However, this is not the case for teenagers and young adults - only 30-40% survive long-term. Today, few people in the 16-34 year age group take part in clinical trials of new drugs and protocols.

The Trust's aim is to give teenagers and young adults with blood cancers a far greater chance of survival by supporting research and clinical trials and by improving access to information about complementary therapies.

Tim's courage, determination and positive attitude made a huge impact on his family and friends. He is the inspiration and driving force behind the Trust's work to help other young people like him.
Launching Tim's Trust - The Walk to the World Cup
Tim, like many 23 year-olds, dreamed of going to Germany to support England in the World CUp Finals. It helped to sustain him during the long hard months of chemotherapy.

Sadly, Tim never made that trip. His father John, however, decided to travel to Germany himself but he covered every mile on foot setting off from Wembley on Cup Final Day and arriving in Frankfurt in time for England 's first game against Paraguay .
You can read and see more of John's amazing journey by clicking on the Walking to the World Cup page. Other fundraising events during 2006 included; a Walk with Ian Botham and a charity dinner and auction at the Emirates stadium .
